The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) presented the Updated Guide for the Treatment of Hepatitis B at the ILC 2017 held from 19 to 23 April in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This document shows the new guidelines of clinical practice for the management of hepatitis B virus infection (HBV). This infection remains an epidemiological problem due to several factors including vaccination policies and migration.
The updated version reflects a better understanding of the natural history of hepatitis B as it is recognized that during the immune tolerance phase, people may experience progression of liver disease and be at risk for liver cancer. The new guidelines for initiation and withdrawal of treatment are discussed, as well as new authorized drugs
