ALEH Fellowship Experiences

Beca OCHSNER – ALEH Mentorship Program

Dr. Brainy Omar Rodriguez Vargas

Perú

First of all, I would like to thank you for the opportunity provided to carry out the Fellowship at the Ochsner Clinic. It was a very good and productive experience.

The Ochsner health system is the largest in the state of Louisiana, it manages a large number of patients and provides high-level health services.
The entire process concerning fellowship’s logistics was impeccable. The doctors at the Ochsner Clinic were very kind and always willing to help in order to understand their work system.
The Hepatology and transplant service works in a coordinated and close manner, the work system is quite organized with meetings to discuss patient cases to enter the transplant list, management of hospitalized patients with liver diseases, meeting with the radiology service for the management of hepatic masses, and meeting with the pathology service to review records of special patients.
During the morning, I attended the medical visit of the internal consultations of hospitalized patients, with a great variety of cases, I learned closely the way they handle the patients with liver cirrhosis and its complications, which agrees to the management guidelines. However, on some occasions we cannot perform completely the aforementioned in our countries in South America because of a lack of financial support. Its liver transplant program is the second largest in the United States with a large number of transplants per year and a fairly efficient selection and management system.
During the afternoon, I attended the medical consultation of outpatients of hepatology and liver transplant, the doctors were very willing to teach and share their personal experiences in the management of patients, I learnt many new things from them.

Altogether, the city of New Orleans is very picturesque and rich in varied culture of French and Spanish influence, a good place to visit.

My experience at Ochsner Clinic Hospital was enriching from the medical and cultural point of view. I had the chance of knowing how the hepatic transplant clinic is managed, and to compare their methods to the ones performed at my institute. I got to meet the ascribed doctors, and engaged in various activities: Medical rounds, external consultation, and academic sessions. The doctors were reachable, and they took me into consideration in the shifts, so I could participate in the areas that most drawn my interest to. In the cultural aspect, I met doctors from various nationalities, all of them with the same aim of improving patient care and being leaders in the field of hepatology and hepatic transplant.

I consider this fellowship to be a great opportunity for Doctors willing to receive formation in the hepatology area or for those that are already in that path. Furthermore, it is an excellent branch given it has a great volume of hepatic transplants from different aetiologies.

I feel grateful for having had the opportunity that was granted to me, and I do hope this fellowship continues for the benefit of future generations.

Dear representatives of ALEH and Ochsner:

I would like to thank the opportunity that you have given me to experience Ochsner, the positive reception that I had from the first moment, agrees with the marvellous disposition of all the people that I met there, who thanks to their kind treatment made this an unforgettable experience.

For my development as a hepatologist, it was very important to have a close knowledge of a first level transplant centre. However, despite my desire to stay longer, I managed to learn many new things and enjoyed my participation in the various meetings and patient care.

Hopefully this opportunity will continue in the future, so that other hepatologists in the region have the chance to live this great experience. Similarly, I do hope to be able to visit Ochsner again for a longer period.

I would appreciate if you could thank everyone who was with me and made the fellowship in New Orleans possible.

Best regards
