The Regional Expansion Advanced Learning (REAL) project is an initiative by the ILTS Education Committee to reach out to Latin America through educational activities in collaboration with ALEH. Through educational events such as the REAL webinars, we are inviting prominent experts in the field of liver transplantation to share their experience with the liver transplant community in Latin America. Our goal is to enhance the partnership with the local LT community and continue to build knowledge and skills in this area.<\/p>\n

\"\"Rodrigo Larrain Zapata<\/strong> – is a Professor of Medicine, Universidad del Desarrollo, Santiago, Chile. Dr. Zapata is transplant hepatologist and Chief of Gastroenterology at Cl\u00ednica Alemana de Santiago. He completed an AASLD clinical Fellowship in Hepatology and Liver Transplantation at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2000-2001. He served as the President of the Chilean Association for the Study of the Liver (2008-2010), President of the Chilean Society of Gastroenterology (2012-2014), and International Member of the Global Guidelines Committee of the WGO (2015-2018). His main clinical interests are in liver transplantation, viral hepatitis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, with > 80 peer-reviewed publications and chapters of textbooks, as author or co-author. Currently, coordinator of the Special Interest Group (SIG) for Liver Transplantation of the ALEH (Asociaci\u00f3n Latinoamericana para el Estudio del H\u00edgado).<\/p>\n

\"\"Varvara A. Kirchner<\/strong> \u2013 is an Associate Professor of Surgery, Stanford University, Stanford, USA. She completed her fellowships in multi-organ transplant surgery at the University of Minnesota, USA in 2015, and living donor liver transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at the ASAN Medical Center, Ulsan School of Medicine, South Korea in 2016. Her clinical interests include living and deceased donor liver transplantation and total pancreatectomy with islet auto-transplantation for chronic pancreatitis. Her research focuses on liver regeneration utilizing stem cell technologies. She served as the Chair for the ILTS Vanguard Committee (2021-2022) and currently is the Vice-Chair Elect for the ASTS Vanguard Committee.<\/p>\n

Speaker<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Ray Kim<\/strong> \u2013 is a Professor of Medicine, Stanford University, Stanford, USA. He serves as Chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Kim received his MD degree from Seoul National University and his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania. He did his residency in internal medicine at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock followed by a fellowship in gastroenterology and advanced training in hepatology\/liver transplantation at Mayo Clinic. He is currently President-Elect for the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease. His career goal is to improve the outcome of individuals with chronic liver disease by identifying the optimal means for diagnosis, monitoring, treatment and prevention.<\/p>\n

Speaker and Moderator<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Josefina Pag\u00e9s <\/strong>– is a medical doctor graduated from the Austral University, Argentina in 2010. She completed her Intensive Care residency at the Austral University Hospital and between 2016-2018 she completed her training in Hepatology and Liver Transplantation at the same hospital. She has been a specialist since 2018. In 2019 she served as Chief Resident of the Hepatology and Liver Transplantation service. Since then, she has been working at the Austral Hospital as a staff doctor in the Hepatology and Liver Transplant Unit. Between 2019 and 2020, she completed a Master\u2019s Degree in Clinical Effectiveness with a focus on Health Technology Assessment. She is part of the multiple regional scientific societies and is currently the Argentine representative of the Liver Transplantation interest group and coordinator of the Cirrhosis interest group of the Latin American Association for the Study of the Liver (ALEH). Dr. Pages has a strong academic vocation, her main areas of interest are advanced liver disease, acute liver failure and liver transplantation.<\/p>\n

Moderator<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Prasun K Jalal<\/strong> – is Stan and Sue Partee endowed Chair in Hepatology, Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Abdominal Transplantation of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery and in the Department of Medicine, Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Jalal is board certified in gastroenterology, internal medicine and transplant hepatology. Dr. Jalal earned his medical degree from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. His extensive training includes training in gastroenterology and hepatology at St. James Hospital in Leeds, England. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center-Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York and in transplant hepatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York. Dr. Jalal’s clinical interests include viral hepatitis, liver transplant, liver cancer and autoimmune hepatitis.<\/p>\n
